Music Therapy Services

Music Therapy at Coleman Adult Day improves mood, cognition, and communication.

How Music Therapy Benefits Seniors and Adults with Developmental Disabilities

Music therapy is a valuable tool that benefits seniors and other adults with disabilities. Music is proven to have positive effects on stress levels, cognitive skills, memory, movement and more. Music is an important part of the Coleman Medical Model and gives our participants an opportunity to truly express themselves. We always have a great time! From our live entertainers, karaoke and sing-a-longs to our music therapy, we plan many music events and therapy sessions every month. Helping to reach a range of individualized goals with music therapy not only benefits our participants, it can also help caregivers connect with their loved ones and provide better care at home.

Music Therapy Improves Mood

Listening to music is proven to help people deal with stress and anxiety by reducing levels of the stress hormone cortisol and slowing high heart rates. Songs with certain rhythms, themes, or lyrics can also help adults with Dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease, or developmental disabilities relax and reduce stress by releasing the “feel good” brain chemicals including serotonins, prolactin, melatonin, and norepinephrine. Music therapy helps our participants at Coleman deal with negative feelings like anxiety and depression by encouraging happy thoughts and promoting a sense of comfort and relaxation.

Music Therapy Increases Social Activity

Music therapy and social music events at Coleman Adult Day encourage our participants to connect and communicate with each other. Our participants love attending our music and dance activities and interacting, and so does our staff! Increased social activity is proven to help slow the effects of Dementia and is beneficial for adults with other disabilities by helping to alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Music Therapy Improves Cognitive Skills

Rhythmic music stimulates certain areas of the brain to increase blood flow and leads to improved cognitive function. Music from the favorite era of seniors with Dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease can also help rekindle positive memories. Since music is made of patterns of repetition and contrast, it can help promote learning and increased cognitive skills for seniors and adults with developmental disorders. Coleman Adult Day Services offers music therapy to help those with mental and physical limitations improve cognitive skills and better process and express their emotions verbally and non-verbally.

Music Therapy Improves Speech

For participants with Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease, music therapy helps slow the decline of speech and language skills. In some instances, music therapy can also inspire individuals who are nonverbal to communicate by singing or humming. One reason we incorporate music in our Coleman Medical Model is that improving communication and social interaction benefits caregivers in addition to their loved ones.

Music Therapy Inspires Movement

At Coleman Adult Day Services, we use music to stimulate different sensory pathways that elicit emotional, cognitive, as well as motor responses from our senior and other adults with disabilities. We encourage dance and non-verbal expression alongside our music therapy. Music helps our participants get moving, whether it’s by dancing, clapping, or tapping their toes. This movement gets blood flowing and releases the “feel-good” hormones that lift spirits.
